This Moon and Sea Pendant is one of a series of three, that are inspired by Cuckmere Haven and its winding river, East Sussex, UK. The Moon and Sea design takes around a day to make, though the process is often spread over several days. I combine a variety of skills I've learned in joinery, marquetry and silversmithing, to carve and inlay these tiny sculptural forms that embody the majesty of nature.

This Moon and Sea Pendant is carved in Sussex Oak, inlaid with a central rose-cut Rainbow Moonstone, surrounded by eco Sterling Silver stars, above a striking Paua Shell sea.

It is hung on a sterling silver 18" / 45cm snake chain. If you have an allergy to silver, please contact me and I can make a hemp slip knot cord for you instead.

Oak

The Oak is a sure, steady and long lived tree. It seems to bestow a real sense of calm and peace to its wearer, as well as bringing courage and protection. It is the tree on the Celtic Wheel of the Year / Tree Calendar that is in line with the Summertime and the Summer Solstice.

Recyled rose-cut Rainbow Moonstone

Moonstone is said to help us to open up from the crown, to remember our true nature, connecting us to our intuition and insight, and, to all the different cycles we experience in life. This Moonstone was recycled and has been re-purposed to make this pendant.

New Zealand Paua Shell

This shell piece has rich sea green tones, with unexpected pinks, and many other colours. Its realistic equidistant waves on the surface, flow into a ribboning river through the centre.

Recycled Brass Stars mixed with eco Sterling Silver Starry Skies, Horizon and Recycled Sterling Silver Chain

I use Brass in some pieces to symbolise the sun and masculine energy, whereas Silver resonates with the feminine. This piece has both for balance. The symbolism of silver is said to restore equilibrium and stability, while bringing protection by reflecting any unwanted energies away. On the reverse of the pendant are three stars in an inverted triangle. They symbolise wild, female, untameable, creative power also known as 'Shakti' in the Indian Art tradition. This is Georgie Gilmore's makers mark.

* Please note each piece of work is unique and handmade using natural organic materials. The pendants have small imperfections e.g. there may be tiny nicks in the shell which is part of the natural weathering process, or non-uniform woodgrain, or some making marks. I don't sand and finish to a uniform machine standand as they are not mass produced, though each piece takes considerable time and care and energy to create. My own cycle informs and influences my woodwork and I try to allow for this too as that is often where the real magic happens - sometimes pieces are wild, other times calm - but they are always lovingly made.

I use Flax /Lindseed oil to seal and cure the wood. If you wish to shine your pendant up again, avoid olive oil as it's yellowing and attracts dust.

These wearable works of art will withstand naked dancing in the rain, absolutely! But I am not certain they would be happy to go swimming too often in the salty sea, nor in the bath, hottubs nor saunas. They have been made to last forever in loving hands but are not tested long-term in such conditions.

Moon magic. Next full moon try to leave your pendant out in the moonlight, to charge it up, activate it and make it a more powerful tool for you. Streams and flowing watery places are another good re-charging point.
* Please note I only make a very limited number of these 'Moon and Sea' pendants each year. This is partly due to the difficulty in finding and selecting just the right pieces of paua shell for the sea (not every paua piece has the qualities to make a pendant truly resonate) but I also think it's right to just take 'a little' from the Earth, whilst making sure we are giving plenty more back. I only use UK gem suppliers who have the correct ethical policies in place to protect the planet and human workers. I try to choose and use eco/recycled silver, brass and gold and source tree woods with considerable care. I tend to choose to work only with indigenous woods of the British Isles. I will not work with exotic or endangered woods. Exceptions to this rule will be made if I am using a wood that has been gifted by friends and tree surgeons, or found at markets, boot sales or charity shops, all of which takes energy and time to source plus a keen eye. For special commissions that require a very particular wood to be sourced that I do not have in stock, I will always make every effort to source wood ethically from sound people that care as much about the planet as I do.
